Ohio State has two main keys to winning the National Championship against Notre Dame.

First Key:
The first is to open up the passing game through Jeremiah Smith and Emeka Egbuka, just as they’ve done in their three playoff games. Quarterback Will Howard has been excellent, throwing for over 280 yards in each of those victories, and the Buckeyes will need to continue attacking through the air. This passing game has been one of their biggest strengths, with Howard spreading the ball around to multiple targets like Carnell Tate and others. Smith and Egbuka are elite playmakers, and if Ohio State can get them involved early, they can wear down Notre Dame’s secondary and create big plays downfield.
Second Key:
Second key is for Ohio State’s defense to take control for long stretches of the game, allowing the offense to build a comfortable lead. The defense, led by J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer, has been outstanding in the playoffs, limiting opponents to 21 points or fewer. The 21 points given up to Oregon might seem high, but it’s misleading since the Ducks only scored 8 points in the first half. Ohio State’s defense has been excellent at shutting down the strengths of opposing offenses, and if they can stop Riley Leonard and Jeremiyah Love from breaking off big runs in Notre Dame’s rushing attack, it will be a huge advantage. With their pass rush and coverage ability, the Buckeyes can set the tone and force Notre Dame into tough situations.

On offense, the Buckeyes need to stay balanced. While their passing game will be key, their rushing attack with TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins has been strong all season. The running game will be important for controlling the clock and keeping Notre Dame’s defense on its toes, but if Ohio State wins big, it will likely be because of Howard’s ability to throw the ball efficiently and find his playmakers downfield.
Ohio State has scored 42, 41, and 28 points in their three playoff wins, showcasing their offensive depth and versatility. Even when Smith wasn’t heavily involved in the Texas game, Howard was able to exploit the Longhorns’ secondary, connecting with Egbuka, Tate, and others to move the ball. If Ohio State can continue to be efficient and explosive on both sides of the ball, they’ll be well-positioned to capture the national title.
