The Grand Canyon University (GCU) baseball team holds an overall record of 14-10, with a conference record of 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The Lopes have demonstrated strong performance at home with an 8-2 record, while their away record stands at 5-6, and they are 1-2 in neutral site games.

  • Josh Wakefield (Outfielder): In the 2025 season, Wakefield has been a consistent force at the plate. He leads the team with an impressive batting average of .424, showcasing his ability to make contact and get on base regularly. Wakefield's offensive prowess is further highlighted by his contributions in home runs and RBIs, making him a central figure in the Lopes' lineup.  Building upon his performance from the previous season, Wakefield has demonstrated significant improvement and consistency. His elevated batting average and increased power numbers in 2025 reflect his dedication and development as a hitter. Wakefield's contributions have been instrumental in GCU's offensive success this season. His ability to deliver in clutch situations and provide leadership on and off the field underscores his importance to the team's overall performance.

  • Garrett Ahern (RHP): Ahern has been a cornerstone of the Lopes' pitching staff, demonstrating consistency and effectiveness. Over six starts, he has achieved a 3-1 win-loss record with an impressive 3.13 ERA and a WHIP of 1.26. In 31.2 innings pitched, Ahern has allowed 29 hits and 11 earned runs, while issuing 11 walks and striking out 32 batters. Opponents are batting just .246 against him, highlighting his ability to limit offensive production. Gculopes

    • Impact on the Team: Ahern's reliability as a starter has provided stability to GCU's rotation. His ability to work deep into games has alleviated pressure on the bullpen, allowing for more strategic relief appearances. Ahern's leadership on the mound has been instrumental in the Lopes' competitive performance this season.

    • Comparison to 2024 Season: Building upon his 2024 performance, Ahern has shown marked improvement in key statistical areas, including ERA and strikeout-to-walk ratio. This progression underscores his dedication to refining his craft and contributing more significantly to the team's success.

In summary, Garrett Ahern's standout performances in the 2025 season have solidified his role as a pivotal player for GCU baseball, with his pitching prowess playing a crucial role in the team's achievements.

Pivotal for continued success:

Current Performance:

  • Batting Average: .342

  • Home Runs: 2

  • RBIs: 15

  • On-Base Percentage (OBP): .410

  • Slugging Percentage (SLG): .500

Yorke's statistics indicate solid contributions, particularly with a .342 batting average and a .910 on-base plus slugging (OPS). However, elevating his power numbers and run production could significantly bolster GCU's offensive capabilities.

Potential Impact of Enhanced Performance:

If Yorke increases his home run tally and RBIs, it would provide the Lopes with greater depth in their lineup, creating more scoring opportunities and alleviating pressure on other key hitters. Additionally, improved slugging from Yorke could lead to more extra-base hits, further advancing baserunners and contributing to higher run totals.

Given Yorke's potential and current role within the team, his stepping up offensively could be a catalyst for GCU's pursuit of a WAC championship this season.

Upcoming Schedule:

The Lopes are set to host Seattle University in a three-game series starting March 28, 2025, at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark. Following this, they will face UTA and BYU in home games scheduled through late April.  Overall, the GCU baseball team has shown resilience and competitiveness throughout the season, with significant contributions from key players on both offense and defense. As they continue their WAC play, the Lopes aim to build on their successes and strive for a strong finish to the 2025 season.
