2025 NFL Prospect Profile: Brashard Smith (SMU Mustangs)

With the 2024 NFL Draft featuring a stacked running back class, one name that demands attention is SMU’s Brashard Smith. A former wide receiver at Miami, Smith made a seamless transition to running back during his senior campaign at SMU, and the results were nothing short of spectacular.

A Breakout Season on the Ground and Through the Air

In his first full season as a running back, Smith rushed for 1,270 yards, ranking second in the ACC, and scored 18 total touchdowns 14 on the ground and four as a receiver. His receiving background was evident, as he hauled in 35 catches for 305 yards, showcasing his dual-threat capabilities.

Smith’s versatility and production have placed him squarely on NFL scouts’ radars. He’s a natural fit in today’s game, where running backs are often asked to contribute as both runners and pass-catchers.

An Intriguing Skillset for NFL Teams

His background as a receiver gives him the ability to line up in multiple positions and schemes, making him a matchup nightmare for defenses.

On tape, Smith’s vision and high football IQ stand out. He consistently finds openings for big gains, displaying patience and an instinctive understanding of the game. His balance after contact is remarkable, as defenders struggle to bring him down once he has the ball in his hands. Pair this with his track-level speed, and you have a back who can turn routine plays into highlight-reel moments.

Smith’s ability to win in space makes him an especially difficult challenge in one-on-one situations. Whether it’s bursting through a gap, shaking a linebacker in the flat, or catching a swing pass and breaking into the open field, Smith is a weapon wherever he lines up.

Draft Stock and Pro Potential

Despite his impressive production, Smith’s relatively light college workload adds to his appeal. He enters the draft with fresh legs and untapped potential, making him an ideal candidate to develop into a workhorse back. Initially, he projects as a complementary player, but his ceiling is much higher.

NFL teams looking for a versatile, dual-threat back with home-run potential should be watching closely. Smith’s skillset allows him to fit into a variety of offensive systems, whether as a featured runner, a pass catching specialist, or both.
